
COMPETITION AGILITY:
The goals of the Competition Agility class are to continue the progression of skills learned in Advanced Agility to perform more complex handling skills on sequences between the dog/handler team using American Kennel Club (AKC) agility equipment, with special emphasis placed on dog safety. Distance handling, course analysis and independent obstacle performance will be covered in this class. Focus will be on rewarding the proper performance of all obstacles and execution of complex handling skills.
At the end of this session the participants should:
1. Understand the need for distance handling for all teams at the advanced level.
a. Understand how to teach distance work to the dog.
b. Become proficient at an intermediate level of distance challenge.
2. Have an increased comfort level with agility course analysis including:
a. The advantages and disadvantages of specific agility moves.
b. Evaluating difficult portions of courses, including possible handling alternatives.
c. Planning the most efficient course path.
3. Improve their dog’s obstacle performance toward the ultimate goal of completely independent obstacle performance in all situations.
Prerequisites for enrollment in Competition Agility class are applicable to the dog seeking enrollment in the class:
The dog and handler must have:
1. Successfully completed TCKC’s Advanced Agility Class; AND
2. Have earned at least a Novice agility title or comparable title;
OR
The dog and handler must be:
3. Evaluated by the Agility Coordinator and/or Director of Training to determine if the participant and dog can adequately perform those skills taught in TCKC’s Advanced agility class; AND
4. Have earned at least a Novice agility title or comparable title.
